Our Experience
Hear from our members their experience!

    Yeojin Lee, 4th Year BME

I’ve been scribing in the emergency department for 2 years and I was initially inclined to join because I wanted clinical experience and to become comfortable working within a fast-paced environment surrounded by other healthcare workers. I found the job through indeed, and was assigned to Hoag Hospital through Scribe America.
I’ve learned that one of the most important things working in the healthcare field is how you manage your workflow to maximize efficiency even in stressful situations, and realizing how to learn from your mistakes. One of the biggest benefits to scribing is working one-to-one with your provider; by doing so, you can build relationships with them where you’re able to ask for advice, feedback, and career-related questions.
Whether you’re looking for a job or research, I recommend finding what you’re personally interested in rather than simply grabbing any opportunity that comes your way. That high you get of gaining something fades quickly if you realize you hate your job, so I recommend reaching out to people who are in positions you are interested in, and asking them for insight on how their experience is.

I’ve been working as a medical assistant for one month. Even though it’s a short time, I was drawn to the position because I’ve always been interested in hands-on patient care and wanted to gain direct experience in a clinical setting. I knew it would give me a closer look at how healthcare teams function and help me confirm my passion for working with patients.

In just a month, I’ve already learned so much, both technically and interpersonally. I’ve gained experience with taking vitals, assisting with procedures, and updating medical records. More importantly, I’ve learned how important communication, empathy, and teamwork are in a healthcare environment. Even simple tasks can make a big difference in a patient’s comfort and trust.

I’d recommend starting with any position that gives you real exposure to patient care, even if it’s entry-level. Whether it’s volunteering, shadowing, or working as a medical assistant, these roles help you build a strong foundation and understand the pace and emotional demands of healthcare. Also, be open to learning from everyone around you (doctors, PAs, other MAs, etc) because every interaction is a chance to grow.

Andrew Dieu, 4th year Human Biology

I have been part of research for 1 year and 3 months. At first I honestly did not really understand the whole premed or prehealth route and thought it was just four years of college and four years of medical school. Through peers, and mentors, I learned about research and how it can directly impact the medical field on a larger scale than just patient to patient care.

I was drawn to clinical based research and chose projects that appealed to my interests. This allowed me to interact with patients, talk directly to doctors, and shadow surgeries while collecting data. I also gained insight into every role in the healthcare system, from technicians that I didn’t even know existed to nurses, which gave me a broader understanding of the field.

Look for opportunities that match your interests but also give you a wide range of experiences. The broader your exposure, the more perspectives you will gain about the healthcare field. Use undergrad to explore as much as possible so you can find where you want to make an impact after college.
